RV Trip Safety

RV based travel is an amazing way to balance the luxury of staying in a hotel or cabin with the adventure of the open road or camping in nature. However, there’s a few important aspects to RV safety and maintenance that you should understand before embarking on your adventure; here’s a list of the RV trip safety essentials, as prepared by the towing experts at Chicago Towing.

Pre-Trip RV Servicing

Have your RV serviced before your trip in order to ensure safety. Make sure all of the tires have no bumps or tears, and that they are inflated to the proper pressure – and that their tread isn’t worn down. Make sure that the brakes are working properly, and that the wheel bearings are in proper condition – as well as checking the engine belts. We also recommend cleaning out the air conditioner, including it’s internal coils and filters.

Awning Check

Make sure that all the RV’s awnings are working properly, as well as your windshield wipers – because August is a season for extreme Summer rains.

Pack the RV with all Essentials

Fill your RV with all essential camping gear – but only pack the essentials. These include tents, sleeping bags, or even bikes. Consider getting a bike rack to attach the bikes to the side of the RV with in order to maximize storage space.

Fridge Preparation

Turn on the RV’s fridge the night before your trip, and don’t put any food in it until it’s temperature is lowered to between thirty-eight and forty degrees. It’s also a good idea to bring along a cooler to store your drinks.

Campsite Reservations

Since August is an incredibly popular month for camping trips, we recommend planning your camping stops in advance. This prevents the occurrence of showing up to a National Park to find that all the camping sites are already booked – which especially is inconvenient when you’re tired and have been driving for hours, as having to drive around looking for somewhere to stay when you’re tired can be dangerous. Make as many reservations as you need, as far in advance as possible.
