Essential teen driver tips

Are you raising a teenage driver? If you are, it’s necessary to provide them with as much safety knowledge as you can to ensure that they are schooled on how to be a safe driver. Here’s some expert tips prepared by the driving gurus at Chicago Towing in order to keep your teen drivers safe and educated.

Stoplight Logic

Complicated stoplights with more than three Red, Yellow, and Green lights can be very confusing- from flashing arrows to curved ones. Some signs require drivers to yield before turning left rather than simply turn – so make sure to educate your teen on the meaning of these stoplights when you’re driving around with them learning.

Long Distance Trips

If the longest trip they’ve taken has been to school and back, you’re going to want to teach them how to handle more difficult long distance drives. It can be exhausting and hypnotizing to drive long distances, so try to practice free range distance driving with them by allowing them to get behind the wheel during family road trips or excursions.

Night Driving

Make sure to spend time with them driving around at night on both the freeway and the empty side streets until they feel comfortable navigating in the dark and activating the car’s beams and blinkers as necessarily. Make sure to school them on the dangers of drowsy, tired, or drunk driving, and the importance o f not pushing yourself to drive when you feel impaired or otherwise unable to give it your 100% attention.

Unfamiliar Areas / Maps

Teach teens to pay close attention to their geography by reading a map with them, and helping to create alternative road escape plans in the event of a missed turn, exit, or off ramp. Teach them not to make sudden quick turns, and the importance of staying steady and safe on your way to your destination. It sure wouldn’t hurt to teach them how to read or navigate a map as well.
