In this blog entry, the Chicago roadside assistance experts here at Chicago Towing will detail exactly what to know about the process of changing a flat tire.
Steps for Changing a Flat Tire
- Right when you see that you have a flat tire, find a safe area to stop and change it. Don’t suddenly brake your vehicle or turn – especially if the road is crowded. Slow down and gradually brake over time to gently pull over to a safe area.
- Turn on hazard lights so your vehicle can be clearly spotted by other drivers.
- Tae of the hub cap or wheel cover. If your lug nuts are exposed, don’t do this.
- Loosen your car’s lug nuts. Using your lug wrench, turn the lug nuts counterclockwise until you break their resistance.
- Put the jack under the vehicle’s frame alongside the flat tire. When the jack is in place, jack the vehicle up.
- Take off the lug nuts fully using the lug wrench.
- Take off the tire by strongly gripping it with both hands and pulling it towards you.
- Take the spare tire and put it on the lug bolts that you took the flat tire off of.
- Replace the lug nuts and use your fingers to tighten them.
- Lower the vehicle down the ground and remove the jack.
- Tighten the lug nuts fully with the lug wrench.
- Replace the hub cap back on the vehicle.
- Put all the tire changing tools securely back in the trunk.
